How do I get a letter of authority?
You will need to submit an application for a Letter of Authority to the Master of the High Court.
There are certain documents, known as the reporting documents, that must first be completed.
These documents, together with the supporting documents, will then need to be submitted either directly to the Master’s Office or online via the Master’s online portal.
How long does a letter of authority take?
The turnaround time provided by the Master of the High Court is generally 21 working days. However, due to current backlogs, this process may take longer.
Please note that the Master may issue an emergency Letter of Authority on a case-by-case basis, which can be processed within 24 hours in exceptional circumstances.
For example, this may be considered where funds are urgently required to cover funeral expenses and there is no nominated beneficiary on the funeral policy.
How much does it cost to get a letter of authority in South Africa?
It is completely free to obtain a Letter of Authority in South Africa if you choose to handle the estate administration yourself.
However, if you appoint an attorney or an estate administration company to assist you, they are entitled to charge professional fees for their services.
Some attorneys charge a fixed fee for obtaining a Letter of Authority, while others charge the standard estate administration fee of up to 3.5% (excluding VAT) of the gross value of the estate.

How long does an estate take to settle in South Africa?
An estate can take between 1 to 3 years to be finalised.
This timeframe is dependent on the complexity of the estate, as well as the backlog at the Master’s Office and SARS.
